Celebrate the special moments in life with the style and grace that your guests will remember forever. Théodore Haviland was the second son of David and Mary Haviland. David Haviland ran a shop with his brother at No. 47 John Street (near Wall Street) in New York which later became the Haviland Brothers China Company.

David and Mary travelled from the United States to Limoges, France arriving in April/May 1842. They chose Limoges because kaolin had been found nearby. Kaolin, unique to Limoges porcelain, is a very pure white clay.

Théodore, was born in August 1842 in Limoges, France. The Civil War (1861-65) had disastrous effects on the American business. As soon as the war was over, David sent his son, Théodore, to the U. To handle distribution and marketing of the companys china.

Although only 23 years old, Théodore Haviland was a talented businessman and managed to develop a sales network which was very successful. The products of his firm became immensely popular, so much so, that the factory in Limoges could not keep up with demand.

Charles Edward Haviland (Théodores older brother) and Théodore Haviland took over the company from their father. Charles Edward Haviland, took over management of the firm and Théodore continued to the handle distribution and marketing.

Théodore eventually found it impossible to work under his brother Charles. On December 31, 1891, Haviland and Company was dissolved. Charles Edward Haviland and his son George established a new company on January 1, 1892, retaining the original name: H & Company. Théodore opened his own factory in 1893, the Theodore Haviland Company in New York.

The china was still produced in Limoges, France. Théodore Haviland died in 1929. Lived close to the Haviland China Company. She began collecting the Haviland China. Originally, the Haviland China patterns were never named.

Schleiger began cataloging dozens of patterns by. Assigning a number to each pattern. She took the notebook to the china company. The Havilands were both impressed and grateful. At some point, the two families, Haviland and Schleiger became intertwined.

Ultimately, she published six volumes of Haviland patterns. Her numbers created the means used to identify the most common patterns. Theodore Haviland Schleiger 142A Bone China.

The Schleiger Pattern #142A was produced from 1903 to 1920 and consists of pink and lighter pink Asters touched with white, bright green leaves and stems with a blue scroll or ribbon appearing throughout. The pattern was produced on the Romeo Blank #300 bone china.

The rim of the plate is slightly scalloped and embossed with doubled gold trim. The outer gold trim on this blank is daubed and not uniform by design. This irregularity of design is not due to wear. Bone china is typically made from cow bone. The bone is finely ground into bone ash, and it is then mixed with feldspar, ball clay, quartz, and kaolin (a type of clay).

Bone china undergoes two firing processes. The first causes the product to shrink, and about 20% of the pieces that are made will crack and/or break at this stage.

The second firing happens after the piece is glazed, and melts the glaze into the piece sealing in the cracks.
