JPL Pouyat Limoges Plate Hand Painted A. II Sailboats Dated 5/11/1898 w/Gold. Elegant Decorative 8 1/2 PLATE from JPL (Jean Pouyat) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED by a Talented Artist A.

II, Beautiful SAILBOATS on water, dated May 11th, 1898, Scalloped, Embossed. DESCRIPTION: This plate was designed in a very classic pattern with hand painted brown sailboats on open water by a talented artist, A. II and dated May 11th, 1898.

The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The boats are set on washes that vary in color from brown to yellow to blue to purple with gold accenting the rim and embossing. The back of the plate is the high white of the porcelain.

CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, its condition is superb. The only issue is a very small flake on the back rim just below the largest sailboat.

This is barely visible from the front. (See photo #7 immediately to the left of the right most post of the black plate holder). We can find no defects or other damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear to the paint with only the slightest age appropriate wear to the gold on the rim.

DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 8 1/2" and a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700's. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849.

About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851 and the specific one that is on this plate is called mark #5 Mary Frank Gaston in Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3. However, remember the plate is dated by the artist as May 11th, 1898. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.

The stand was used as a photo prop and is not part of this listing. See additional international policies below.
