This 19th Century charger by the renowned French porcelain firm, Jean Pouyat Limoges (JPL), will make a stunning addition to your home or office. Featuring a FULLY hand-painted no transfers here!

Portrait of a regal Bedouin riding a stallion in the desert, this larger charger is certainly impressive for both its subject matter and unparalleled quality. The majestic rider brandishes a rifle fitted with a bayonet, while his steed is outfitted in a fine saddle and bridle. A palace partially obscured by the sun's shadows and surrounded by palm trees is depicted in the background. The sweltering sun seems to be setting in shades of crimson and cerulean. Darker hued clouds mottle the sky.

This Bedouin traveler is seemingly portrayed in an Orientalist fashion. Orientalism is the imitation or depiction of the Eastern world using stereotypes and mythologies by writers, designers, and artists from the Western world.

This style was popular among French artists during the 18th and 19th Centuries, as fascination with the enigmatic Eastern world spread in academia. Also featuring an embossed mold, this charger possesses a scalloped border that is thinly outlined in gilt. Excellent, preowned condition with no cracks, chips, or crazing. Measures approximately 11.75 in diameter. Many firms made porcelain in Limoges due to the region's kaolin rich soil.

One of these companies belonged to Jean Pouyat, who signed pieces made in his factory with'J. Jean Pouyat was a major exporter of porcelain wares to the United States, and sent over both decorated and undecorated articles called'blanks. The'blanks' were used extensively by American decorating studios such as Pickard and amateur china painters. This magnificent charger is double marked by Jean Pouyat, which denotes that the "blank" and decoration (painting) were completed by JPL. Jean Pouyat decorated pieces are known for their unmatched craftsmanship and quality. Do not pass up your opportunity to own this rare Limoges charger!
