Antique Hand Painted Signed Franz A. Bischoff Limoges Plate Hydrangeas Collector

ANTIQUE HAND PAINTED SIGNED FRANZ A. BISCHOFF LIMOGES PLATE HYDRANGEAS COLLECTOR. This exceptional plate is hand painted and signed by Franz Arthur Bischoff in 1889.

He was an American artist who was famous for his china painting, floral paintings, and later, his Southern California Landscapes. He was often referred to as "The King of Roses Painting". The plate measures just shy of 8.5 inches.

The center is a pale matte cream color with a bit of pink blush, then a dusty rose applied to the outer rim which is swirled and fluted. The very outer edge is dusted in gold. A cluster of white hydrangeas. Are painted mostly on one side, with one wandering up from the rest. The plate does have some minor damage.

There is one noticeable chip on the outer edge and some minor wear consistent with its age. It matches another with wild roses on it that I just listed previously.

Born in Austria in 1864, Franz Bischoff immigrated to America in 1885 at the age of 21, having studied ceramic decoration in Vienna beforehand. He worked as a china decorator in New York, Pittsburgh and. Before moving to Dearborn, Michigan where he founded the.

Bischoff School of Ceramic Art. Around 1892 and taught china decorating, which was a very popular pass-time of fashionable ladies in that era. In 1906 he moved his family to Pasadena, California where he built a palatial Italianate home and studio in 1908 and turned his art to Impressionist California Landscapes. He died on February 5, 1929 (exactly 91 years ago today).

There are many examples of his paintings, but very few of his ceramic works, and I can find no examples of his work on line from this time period. 1889 would categorize this plate as an early work, probably when he lived in Fostoria, before he set up his own studio in Michigan. Therefore, quite a rare find and worth serious consideration.

My great grandmother lived in Toledo, Ohio (just 40 miles away) and was an accomplished artist who painted several sets of dessert and ice cream plates that certainly reflect this influence. This plate was mixed in with her own works of the same date, so I think it safe to surmise that she was a student of Bischoffs. Perhaps he traveled to Toledo to teach classes to the ladies there. This plate has been passed down in her family along with her own painted ceramics - to granddaughter, then great granddaughter.

I might add that 2 pieces of his china painting work from 1908 were appraised on Antiques Roadshow, Season 19, Episode 14, April 15, 2015. The pieces that were displayed were in perfect condition. I have priced this plate at a much more reasonable level considering condition and the current market.
